Fort Collins Church Youth Group
A Job Well Done

by Amanda Pioche

Fort Collins, Colorado, Seventh-day Adventist Church youth group gave La Vida Mission a hand from June 6 to June 11.

Pastor Paul Eagan, Amy Indermuehle and Becky Pherson accompanied students Adrianna Cruz, 14; Dylan Mateo, 12; DeWayne Neidigh, 16; Dakotah Padilla, 13; Hayley Pherson, 17; Kate Pherson, 15; and Jodi Sellers, 19, on the trip.

L-R Pastor Paul Eagan, Dylan Mateo, Hayley Pherson, Adrianna Cruz, Dakotah Padilla, Becky Pherson Kate Pherson, Jodi Sellers, DeWayne Neidigh and Amy Indermuehle worked hard and shared much-appreciated talents from June 6 to June 11.

The group was able to paint in the school and in an apartment as well as fix a fence behind the guest house. Girls, cleaned the church as though they were spring cleaning, not merely doing a weekly touchup. The students also started to build a much-needed shade in front of the cafeteria.

When asked why they chose to come to La Vida Becky answered, “A couple who had been to La Vida came to our church and we were looking for a place to go for our mission trip. The couple suggested La Vida and several of our church members who had also been to the mission agreed that we should come here.”

Several of the group were asked, “What was the best part of your trip?”

Pastor Eagan thought it was meeting La Vida staff and seeing the youths’ contribution. Amy Indermuehle said it was seeing the girls go beyond what they were asked to do in cleaning the church.

Jodi thought it was seeing the interesting surroundings and Dylan liked working, playing basketball and roping. Dakotah enjoyed playing in the gym, getting wet during a water fight and the talent show.

Pastor Eagan would encourage any youth group to come to La Vida for a mission experience.

Circle of Light

“Somebody” doesn’t want Barbara Starrett’s book, Circle of Light, to be printed, but it will be.

A series of printing challenges has delayed publishing so the book is not available on schedule.

Those who have ordered and paid for a book were sent a letter explaining reasons for the delay, but Barbara feels reasonably sure that a CD album of Circle of Light will be available soon. Cost will be the same price as that quoted for the book in print.

Those who missed receiving a letter and did pay for a book should know that, if you wish, Barbara will mail you a CD album when it comes out and a free book in print when they are published. Or, if you would prefer to cancel your order, money will be refunded.

Let us know which you would prefer to do and please keep this project in your prayers.

La Vida Mission Has New Administrator

La Vida Mission board of directors asked Warren Bredenkamp to head the mission staff as administrator with Vicki Pioche, interim director, serving as assistant administrator until September.

Warren and his wife, Barbara, arrived at La Vida from Pennsylvania about three months ago to be boys’ houseparents. He has taken a position of spiritual leadership at the mission while Barbara and he both supported youth activities at the mission school and in Sabbath School. Barbara is now organizing a Pathfinders Club, in which all mission school children will be involved.

Warren plans to put procedures and protocols in place, help improve the lines of communication and reinvigorate church and Sabbath School at La Vida Church.

The board also decided to focus on improving the telephone system, the internet system and our medical outreach. A goal is to have the improved telephone system done in three months.

Betty Smith, clinic nurse, said they have a choice of places to work, but La Vida is close, in the United States, and, of course, we have a real need amongst the Navajo here.

School's In

Teachers Charity Garcia, Norla Chee and Danny and Glori Williams drove off to classes at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the beginning of June.

Their classes covered mostly teaching strategies and lesson planning as part of their professional development effort sponsored by the Mid- America Union Conference and La Vida Mission Board of Directors.

They returned to the mission energized and full of ideas to implement in the classroom.

After returning home, they continue to do independent coursework during the summer while they work at the mission school preparing for next school year.

School Ends with Student Art Show

On the last day of school Charity Garcia’s 5th – 8th grade classroom was arranged to look like an art gallery, displaying all the students’ art work to the parents, community, teachers and staff. Teachers, students and house parents dressed up in formal attire to attend the art show and reception.

Student Artwork
Latifa's Work

Two weeks before the show students worked steadfastly on their art projets. Upper grades researched an artist whose work they admired and then attempted to imitate that artist’s style. Younger students worked in pairs on building-type projects while older students did more painting and illustration.
